Nearly thirty years ago, David and Wendy Xu made a decision that would shape their family for generations. David, who had studied nursing in China and practiced internal medicine before immigrating to the United States almost fifty years ago, saw a need and a calling. Together with Wendy, they converted the basement of their own home into a modest six-unit assisted living residence.
It wasn't a business plan. It was personal. The residents who moved in weren't clients. They became extended family. Wendy cooked their meals. David monitored their health. And their son Kevin? He grew up surrounded by them.
Kevin didn't just visit an assisted living home after school. He lived in one. The residents became like grandparents to him. He helped with chores in high school, assisted with care through college at UMBC, and eventually earned his medical degree from Jinan University. He could have gone anywhere. He chose to come home.
What started as six residents in a basement grew into Pasadena Home Care, a fifteen-unit facility still serving families today. Then came Morning Rainbow Assisted Living, a sixteen-unit home. And now, Columbia Meadows: a ninety-unit community in the heart of Howard County that carries forward everything David and Wendy built, with the same philosophy they started with three decades ago.
